Funny Sister of the Groom Speech Examples That Aren't Cringe
Your brother is getting married, and you’ve been asked to give a toast. If you're like most sisters, you have a lot of material. Childhood embarrassing stories? Check. Questionable teenage fashion choices? Double check. But finding funny sister of the groom speech examples that walk the fine line between "hilarious roast" and "ruining the wedding" can be difficult.
On The Wedding Police podcast, we’ve heard incredible, tear-jerking sister speeches—and we’ve heard absolute disasters where a sibling revealed way too much about their brother’s past. If you want the full breakdown of how to structure any toast, read our guide on How to Write a Wedding Speech. But today, we’re focusing strictly on the sisters.
The "Sister Roast" Rules
Before we get to the examples, here are three golden rules for a sister of the groom speech:
- Rule 1: Punch up, not down. Tease him about his obsession with Star Wars or his inability to do laundry. Do NOT tease him about ex-girlfriends, financial struggles, or deep insecurities.
- Rule 2: Don't forget the bride. This is critical. The speech should start with your brother, but it MUST end by praising his new spouse and welcoming her to the family.
- Rule 3: Keep it under 4 minutes. Siblings tend to ramble because they have a lifetime of stories. Pick ONE story.
Example 1: The "Protective Sister" Opening (Funny & Sweet)
"Hello everyone. For those who don't know me, I’m [Your Name], [Groom's Name]’s older sister. Growing up, it was my job to protect him from the world. It was also my job to blame him for everything I broke in the house. Balance is important."
"When [Groom] first told me about [Bride], I was skeptical. As his sister, I set the bar impossibly high. I needed someone who was smart, kind, patient enough to deal with his obsession with fantasy football, and most importantly, someone who would finally take over the job of telling him his outfits don't match. [Bride], you have exceeded all my expectations. Especially the outfit part."
Example 2: The "Childhood Survival" Story
"I’m [Your Name], and I have known [Groom] literally his entire life. We survived family road trips, shared bathrooms, and the dark ages before high-speed internet. If you can survive being [Groom]'s sister, you can survive anything."
"But honestly, growing up with him was a privilege. [Tell a short, 1-minute story highlighting a good trait, e.g., how he always shared his toys, or how he fiercely defended you at school]. That’s who he is. He’s fiercely loyal. And [Bride], seeing the way he looks at you, I know he will spend the rest of his life being fiercely loyal to you."
Example 3: The "Welcome to the Family" Toast (Heartfelt Focus)
"They say you don't get to choose your family, but today, my brother made the best choice possible for all of us. [Bride], welcome to the madness. We are loud, we argue over board games, and we never agree on where to eat. But we love fiercely, and we are so incredibly lucky to add you to our ranks."
"[Groom], you've always been my annoying little brother, but looking at you today, standing next to this beautiful, brilliant woman... you actually look like a grown man. I couldn't be prouder."
The Formula for Success
If you want to write your own speech from scratch, use this template:
- 15 Seconds: Introduce yourself and state your relation to the groom.
- 30 Seconds: Tell a quick, lighthearted joke about growing up with him.
- 90 Seconds: Tell one specific story that transitions from funny to sincere, showing his good character.
- 45 Seconds: Talk directly to the bride. Welcome her. Tell her why she is perfect for him.
- 15 Seconds: Ask everyone to raise a glass to the happy couple.
